You're Hooped
Tactical Problem: Knowing where to place the ball.  How to score. Knowing how to use the underhand serve in a game situation.
Skill development: Proper underhand serving technique.  Serving to a target.  Placing ball in a designated space on opponents court.

Teaching Points: 

 Tactic: 
Serving the ball over the net to a specific target in order to score.

Skill:

  • Hold ball in fingers and palm of non-striking hand.
  • Serving hand is swung back using a straight arm, then brought forward to strike the ball with an upward and forward motion to send the ball over the net. 
  • Good stance, opposite foot forward to serving hand.
  • Eyes on ball.
  • Keep striking hand open, hitting ball on heal of hand.
  • Tee the ball on the fingers of the non-striking hand.
  • Keep the tee arm straight, flex at the wrist.
  • Strike the ball with the heal (flat surface) of the striking hand.
  • Remove tee hand just prior to contact.
  • In serving, transfer weight from back to front foot.
  • Follow through with serving hand.
  • Direct the serve by changing position behind the service line.
  • Change direction of serve by changing body position...angle hand and body to send ball to a given area.

 

 

Organizational Points: 
  • Groups of 2.
  • Serving from behind the three meter line to partner who is within the three meter line on the other side of the net.
  • Serve into a hoop on opposite court.
  • Move hoop(s) to create a new target.
  • For every successful serve into hoop receive two points.
  • For every serve within 1 foot of target receive one point.
Decide:
  • Scoring limit.
  • Placement of hoops.
Extension: 
  • Move service line back as the server success rate increases.
